Classic Car Projects - You Can Build Your Own

!: Classic Car Projects - You Can Build Your Own

There has never been a better time to build a muscle car project. The availability of aftermarket parts, crate motors, disc brake kits and other upgrades make almost anything possible. The other plus is the relative low cost of these parts. One can literally start with a bare shell and build a complete top notch car using aftermarket/new parts exclusively. The sky's the limit!!

Another plus with these older era rigs is the simplicity of the cars themselves. They are much easier to work on or build than the newer stuff. No emissions, electronic fuel injection, abs brakes, air bags or any other advanced systems that require extensive specialized training. All the non-sense is outta the way!!

With sites like eBay and Craigslist, there are tons of sources to find solid project cars. You can find just about any make/model imaginable without a lot of effort.

Choosing A Make and Model:

One of the coolest aspects of this whole car building business is choosing your project. You may want to build a numbers matching 100% correct car and re-create a piece of automotive history, or you may want to get an old "mongrel" for cheap and play the creative angle to build something unique. Cost is a big factor here, a highly sought after numbers matching rig is gonna be much more expensive to acquire and build than an old "grocery getter", but both have advantages.

Comparatively, a 1969 RS/SS numbers matching Camaro is gonna fetch top dollar if done well, if being at the top of the food chain is important to you. The same 1969 Camaro with a puny 327/powergide that was never anything more than a basic model is obviously going to cost less initially and be easier to find than the "top dog".

I think the lower model is more fun to build because the sky's the limit. It was never anything special to begin with, so it's really a blank canvas that can be cloned or modified with any crazy mods/upgrades. The engine, tranny, color, pretty much any variable is possible. You really can't do that with an advanced model without de-valuing it.

Wheelin' and Dealin':

There are running, driving cars that need a little tlc, or there are absolute basket cases out there that can be had for cheap. It depends on the amount of ambition you have. I prefer the basket cases for lots of reasons.

The main reason is there are lots of 'em laying around. Lots of guys start these projects with a lot of enthusiasm, but eventually get in over their heads. They don't have the money or the expertise to see the project through to the end, and it becomes a nightmare. It's not unusual to find projects that come with tons of new parts and killer stuff that cost a small fortune, and now the owner just wants it all gone. If a car on jackstands in someones garage disassembled in a billion little pieces doesn't scare you, there are very good deals out there for you.

Assessing The Condition:

The number one thing i look at when assessing any project is structural condition. Look at the frame rails, suspension mounts, crossmembers etc. for damage or rot. Measure the frame diagonally to be sure the frame isn't crooked. Measure from the cowl area to the outer corner of the radiator support to ensure it's dimensionally correct. It doesn't have to measure "dead-nuts" on, but if there's obvious heavy damage you should find it early.

The good news is that any possible damage is fixable! Just because there is a 2 inch square hole rusted through the rear frame rail doesn't mean the car should go to the crusher!! If fact, the more problems you find are just ammunition you can use to get a lower purchase price. DON'T BE AFRAID OF DAMAGE/RUST! It's all fixable.

Look at door hinges and latches. Window regulators. Dashboard wiring. Is the fuel tank dented? Is all the door glass tinted the same? Has someone hacked up the car in any way to do some freaky custom stuff? Are all the nuts/bolts/fasteners there? Brackets? These are often overlooked details that can be a royal pain to deal with later.

It should go without saying to be sure the title is clear. Previously wrecked cars can be re-titled as "salvage" vehicles. This doesn't mean the car is really damaged beyond repair, it means that the insurance company determined that the cost to repair the car at the time of the damage/accident exceeded the value, so it was "totalled". For example if you owned a 1967 Dodge Dart in that was damaged in 1981, it wouldn't take much damage to exceed "book value" on what was at that time a run-of-the-mill grocery getter.

This affects re-sale value more than anything else, it is a mild deterrent from buying the car, but again, it's leverage to negotiate. If you never plan to sell the car, re-sale value wouldn't be an issue.

Practical Thoughts:

It's very possible to spend years looking for a "perfect project". The problem with that type of conservative thinking is that you'll never find anything "perfect". At some point, you have to stop picking every prospective car to death and jump into the game. For example, is a carved up dashboard really going to be the difference in a successful build and a life altering nightmare? It doesn't take long on any project to find surprises, dealing with them without catastrophising them is the difference in cars that get finished and old rustbuckets on jackstands. A finished car with flaws is worth more than a car that'll be perfect someday. There's an old saying in business: At some point it is necessary to shoot the engineers and begin production.

Calculating The Cost To Finish The Build:

This is where most would-be projects go wrong. You should have a clear idea of what it's all gonna cost before you even look at a car. The bad news is these projects can get out of control really quick if you're not careful. The good news is there are lots of good sources for parts, and catalogs to job-cost the project.

A good first time project would be to just re-condition an old rig without a lot of upgrades. You can expand your skills with really super trick stuff after a few builds. It doesn't take long before you'll be able to build about anything you want.

Here's an example of a basic budget for a simple recondition project:

Initial purchase: 00

Sheetmetal/body parts: 0

Paint/body materials: 0

Rebuild brakes: 5

Rebuilt engine/longblock: 00

Engine add-ons: 50

(headers, holley carb, HEI ignition,

trick valve covers, etc.)

Drivetrain upgrades: 0

(u-joints, tranny cooler, steering

linkage, etc)

Bumpers/trim mouldings: 00

Windshield: 5

Interior Kit: 0

Tires/Wheels: 00

Misc surprises: 00

Est cost to build: ,110

Summary:

Building these cars is a real kick, there is nothing like rescuing an old car with your own hands. The only way to learn to do this is to just get a project and go for it. The good news is it's not that difficult. A willingness to get your hands dirty goes a lot further than high mechanical ability. Someone with basic mechanical aptitude can certainly build a musclecar.

Yamaha Utility ATV Range 2009 - The Big Bear 250cc Utility ATV

!: Yamaha Utility ATV Range 2009 - The Big Bear 250cc Utility ATV

Yamaha Utility ATV Vehicles for 2009
It's very hard to keep up with manufacturers year on year when it comes to range and model, so what we decided to do for you is show you the whole Yamaha ATV Utility Bike in one pretty easy to understand blow.

How many model variations do they have and what are they?

Being fair to Yamaha Motors GB they seemed to have tied this up in a neater package for once, and if you need the model variations there are the Yamaha Grizzley ATV and the Yamaha Big Bear ATV. Each model has it's own variations so let's start from the beginning.
Yamaha Big Bear Utility ATV is the single cylinder 4stroke 230cc model (which is modelled as a 250cc) which is the smallest engine Yamaha ATV do in their range. The 230 air-cooled unit is the tried and tested engine Yamaha have been using for years. The way they say this is the Big Bears can be friendly as well as strong but should always come without major expense and still be fun. The gearing is pretty simple being a 2wheel drive system and the box, well that holds a sensibly simple arrangement of *5*semi-automatic gears and one reverse. Braking and suspension is covered by a Hydraulic Double Disc System on the front and a sealed drum rear brake. As like most machines now it has the standard McPherson Strut style suspension to the front and swingarm rear. Colours - there is only a few to chose from and the consist of BLACK - GREEN - RED!
So not much different there from last year apart from if you order a 2009 brochure you get a big surprise on the front cover - It has 2009 in big print!

As like most Utility ATV Quad Bikes they have a few bits that you can throw on for show and for purpose. The racking system is split front and back which means the front unit will take up tp 30KG maximum and the rear will take up to 45KG. On The Big Bear you also get a tow bar as standard so should you wish to race off home and move your trailer then you can get straight to it without parting with any more cash.

My overall opinion on this machine is this: It is what it is ans that an entry level ATV with a couple of bits thrown in for the sake of it. My guess is that Yamaha Japan probably over ordered on the racks as nearly ever bike has them as standard.

Is the Caparo T1 Really a Racing Car For the Road?

!: Is the Caparo T1 Really a Racing Car For the Road?

It is safe to say that the Caparo T1 road car has not had the easiest development period. Firstly there was the suspension failure whilst giving passenger laps to assembled journalists, then Jason Plato was badly burned on the hands and face whilst testing the car for Fifth Gear. Finally, to top it all, Jeremy Clarkson called the car undriveable at low speeds during its debut on the Top Gear television programme.

It is not surprising that such stinging criticism has hurt Caparo, however in their defence these early tests used pre-production prototype cars, and with hindsight Caparo would have actually waited a little longer before letting journalists loose with their new vehicle.

The Caparo T1 has been called a Formula 1 car for the road, however as Ferrari discovered back in 1995 when it used the same phrase to launch its F50 model, creating such a road car is easier said than done. However anyone who encountered a T1 on the public road with its enormous rear wing, open cockpit and overhead air box could be forgiven for thinking they were actually at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The key to the Caparo's success is its lightweight design, as the lighter you can make a car the better it will accelerate, stop and handle. Certainly this was the mantra of Gordon Murray when he was designing the Mclaren F1 and that supercar tipped the scales at over 1000kg, whereas in contrast the Caparo weighs just 670kg.

The combination of low weight and a 3.5 litre V8 engine that is capable of producing 610bhp gives the T1 an all important power to weigh ratio of 922 bhp per ton, which easily trumps the Bugatti Veyron, however the Veyron will certainly carry you in significantly more style and comfort. By contrast, whilst the Caparo T1 does have two seats, the passenger side is very cramped and set slightly back from the driver's side so you will definitely need to choose your passenger wisely.

When it comes to the performance figures they are nothing short of mind blowing, with the car wearing slick tyres it will reach 60 in 2.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 205 mph, with a low downforce set up on the front and rear wings. These figures are all the more astonishing when you consider that the T1 has all of the requisite features including wing mirrors, number plates, indicator and car headlight bulbs, that allow it to be used completely legally on public roads.

The Caparo T1 is a tremendous engineering achievement that pushes the design and construction boundaries, and just like any pioneer when you are pushing the limits accidents can and do happen. With the full customer versions of the T1 now on sale its safe to say that Caparo has ironed out those early teething troubles, however with a price tag of £225,500 don't expected to see one on your high street any time soon.

KX-RM 65 Suspension Tuning and Modifications

!: KX-RM 65 Suspension Tuning and Modifications

In this article I will briefly familiarize you with the original equipment (o.e.) Kawasaki/Suzuki 65cc suspension design, tuning tips, and modifications. As a suspension tuner and motocross hobbyist I have observed a lot of discussion over o.e. KX/RM65 suspension. There are numerous message boards filled with ambiguous suspension modifications and specifications for this motorcycle.

The front forks on the KX/RM65 are outdated by several decades but can be adjusted for certain riding conditions. Damper rod forks as found on KX/RM65s are outdated since they create an overly progressive dampening curve (they are too soft initially and too harsh during fast fork movement). The rebound adjuster on the front forks can be used to adjust for some cases of head shake and cornering difficulties. Head shake may occur it can due to too much or to little rebound dampening. This may be fixed by turning the adjuster in increments of two clicks and test. The rebound adjustment can also aid with cornering problems. If the bike washes out in corners, turn the rebound adjuster clockwise in increments of two clicks. If the bike does not stand back up from corners fast enough, turn the rebound adjuster out in increments of two clicks. The front of the bike can also be lowered by moving the forks up in the triple clamps. This may aid in cornering but can cause head shake.

The KX/RM65 models are equipped with a rebuildable rear shock that is mounted to a modern linkage system. This system increases the shocks work load as the rear suspension compresses further towards bottoming. A starting point to adjusting the rear shock is to set race sag at 70-75mm but to not exceed static sag by 25mm. If meeting the two conditions is not feasible, a different rate shock spring may be needed. The rebound adjuster can aid rear end stability and traction. If the rear of the bike swaps to the sides or kicks up it may be due to too much or lack of rebound dampening. To solve this turn the rebound adjuster in increments of one turn and test. Rear traction is often times lost when there is too much rebound dampening and this may be solved by turning the rebound adjuster counter clockwise one turn.

The o.e. KX/RM65 suspension performance does not suffice most competitive motocross riders. There are two effective popular tuning services available for the KX/RM65 forks. An emulator valve can be installed which offers a less progressive and more predictable feel to the front end of the bike. This mod is sold as a "bolt on kit" but is not effective if installed in that fashion. Additional damper rod modifications are needed to tune rebound dampening properly. A cartridge system is also available for the forks that can be installed after machining of the lower fork legs. This cartridge system can be tuned by replacing shims and via rebound and compression adjustments. The o.e. KX/RM65 rear shock has a lot of potential and can be tuned by a revalve service. The KX/RM65 suspension may be mediocre initially, but with proper suspension tuning services it can become a very competitive 65cc dirt bike.

Nice Design by :SchwinnOver All Rating Reviews : Great Deal : $349.99Date Created :Apr 08, 2011 04:28:08
Whether you're commuting to work or cruising around town, the Schwinn Crest urban men's hybrid bike offers a comfortably smooth ride. The Crest is outfitted with a 17-inch aluminum hybrid frame and an SR Suntour front suspension fork, helping the bike hold up to shocks from bumpy or rough terrain. The Shimano TX-31 rear derailleur and SRAM 21-speed grip shifters, meanwhile, give you a host of gear options for flat or hilly rides. And riders will love the 700cc rims and 700 x 38c hybrid tires, which are thinner than mountain bike tires but sturdier than most road bike options. Other features include an SR Suntour front derailleur, an alloy adjustable stem with a 30mm rise comfort bar, and alloy linear pull brakes.

Here are some SkyJacker product and brand reviews that I found on the web:

"Good product. Greatly improved bump steer problems on 1995 Jeep Wrangler with 4" lift and 12.5" x 33" tires"

"I am assuredly pleased with the skyjacker steering stabilizer, It assuredly has helped with keeping my jeep steady and between the lines."

"This is the second pair of skyjacker leaf springs I have ordered, and have yet to be dissappointed. The springs were shipped exceptionally fast. I have used skyjackers in all of my trucks and have had no problems. I will be ordering a third set to terminate out my 81 Toyota truck, and it'll be ready for the trails!"

"I was assuredly impressed in the timely manner in which the add-a-leafs where shipped and arrived to me. Facility was a bit tricky. On Chevy Silverados, the gas tank sits in the way of removing the front driver side spring eye bolt. Instead of taking the leafsprings out I had to drop the axel. Make sure you disconnect the brake line brackets so you have enough room to lift the frame up. I also found it easy to reinstall the springs by putting tape colse to the leafs before lifting them up to join them the spring with the eye bolts. C clamps are a must. Over all it is a pretty simple installation. The add-a-leaf is exactly what I was seeing for to get rid of the sagging in the rear end."

"I am very satisfied with both the appearance and execution of these springs. I added 1.5 inch lift to the rear and 2 inches to the front and it looks and Drives "right on"."

"I ordered the skyjacker add a leafs for my 2001 dodge ram 1500 to raise the rear 2 inches. It did what I wanted and didn't stiffen up my springs that much. Im very happy with them and would use them on other vehicles too, Thanks."

The Legendary Sports Car - The Jaguar E-type

One of the most favorite sports cars from the 1960s is the Jaguar E-type, which was man-made in in the middle of the years 1961 and 1974. The car, which is sometimes known as the Jaguar Xk-E, has ranked high on many sports car lists, because it was unique, powerful, and certainly ahead of its time. The cars were sold for over 14 years, and coupled with a low price, this lead to over 70,000 E-types sold.

Over the years there were three distinct versions of the car released. In the beginning, the car was designed to be a race car. However, it moderately turned into a sports car and was first shown to the collective in Switzerland in 1961 as a car for long trips and as a convertible. The collective immediately enjoyed the car, most likely due to its shape. The aerodynamic shape of the car was unique for its time and very influenced other sports cars that came after it.

Great Deals Rear Suspension

When the car was introduced in the United States, it was shown in its gold color and was accompanied by a favorite actress named Marilyn Hanold.

For a car released in 1961, the power was also unheard of. There were four wheel disc brakes, which was only found on race cars at the time, a duplicate overhead cam engine, and fully independent rear suspension. The price at the time was only ,600, which proved the Jaguar E-type to be a great deal.

In 1969, the second version of the car was released. New features included open headlights without glass covers and a good cooling system. The car now offered an air conditioning and power steering options, while the car seats were designed to be more comfortable. The interior and dashboard also experienced a redesign, as new American health and protection regulations had to be met. The second series of the E-type lasted on three years, but that was because the third version was released in 1971.

An upgraded Jaguar V12 engine was used in the third build of the car. This also came with good brakes and thorough power steering. The third series of the Jaguar E-type also had its own unique look, with a front grill and a V12 badge on the rear. The car's wheel arches were also different. This was the last series of the E-type, as the Jaguar Xj-S attempted to replace the car in 1975. Most can agree that the car did not pass the legendary status of the Jaguar E-type.

To this day, the Jaguar E-type is thought about to be one of the best sports car ever built. It's truly a favorite coupe, as it is still shown on the cover of some car magazines. The car hasn't slowed down in new years either, as many E-types are sold online, fluctuating in price from ,000 to ,000. Fans of the original might even be curious in the current Jaguar model, the Xk8, which is regarded by many fans as being the spiritual successor to the legendary sports car.

Corvettes tend to emphasize simplicity over technical complexity. Where nearly all competing brands rely on smaller displacement, more complex and faster-revving engines, the Corvette uses overhead valves easier (OHV) coupled with a major shift to impose up to the connection speed limit. The result is usually less expensive to manufacture and maintain. Another example of this philosophy is the continued use of transverse leaf spring suspension. This is assessedas a lack of sophistication of some automotive purists, and the "lack of sophistication above arguments' heated, even if the unit of Corvette differ significantly from traditional leaf springs from a composite material in an organized way and to act as a stabilizer bars
